Providing enough housing to meet the nation’s growing population has been a priority for Government for many years. I read with interest the White Paper on Housing published in February, entitled “Fixing our broken housing market”. Amongst a broad range of proposals being considered to help meet housing need, the paper raises the sensitive question of how to encourage “empty nesters” to downsize.
Latest figures show that around 90,000 people downsize to smaller homes each year, leaving around three million large family houses which continue to be occupied by the over-65s, despite their children having flown the nest. It is estimated that some £835 billion of housing equity is wrapped up in these homes.
With an ageing population and a worsening housing shortage in many parts of the country, Ministers are now eyeing these “under-occupied” houses as potential homes for younger families.
There is a solution and Blue Cedar Homes are leading the way by providing the kind of homes that people of a certain age want to move to, in places where they can really make the most of their retirement. Our research has shown that many over-55s continue to live in houses that no longer suit their everyday needs. Most are unwilling to compromise on room size – although they would be satisfied with fewer rooms. A sense of community, a lovely outlook and a private garden are also key priorities.
Blue Cedar Homes was established to provide housing to appeal to the “active retired”; specifically discerning house hunters, looking to right-size without having to give up space, quality or standards.
Our success over the past eight years, since selling our first Blue Cedar Homes property at Budleigh Salterton in Devon in 2011, is the result of listening to what our homebuyers actually want and require for their future housing needs, and delivering a new type of housing. This year we will begin work on our 20th scheme – a result, I believe, that speaks for itself.
For further peace of mind, all Blue Cedar Homes properties carry a 10 year NHBC 'Buildmark' warranty.
