Location, location, location

Four reasons why living in the South West is best.

T he South West of England is renowned for its natural beauty and unique character. Spanning from the bucolic countryside of Gloucestershire, right down to the wild beaches of Cornwall, the South West region boasts the perfect balance between rural landscapes, quaint towns and sublime coastlines.

According to a recent nationwide survey by Lloyds Bank and You Gov, the South West takes the top spot as the happiest place to live, especially for those aged 65 and over. The Happiness Index asked Brits how satisfied they are in their local communities, with the report revealing that good transport links, convenient amenities, living in close proximity to friends and family, safety, cleanliness and a friendly community spirit all contributed to their happiness levels.

Here at Blue Cedar Homes, we believe in creating homes in the very best locations, so we have compiled a list of the top four reasons why we think life in the South West is hard to beat.

Something for everyone

With eight charming counties, covering an area of 9,200 square miles, you are sure to find a home in a location that is perfectly suited to you in the South West. Take time to plan what you would like from your new community and explore the areas that take your fancy. If you are moving from further afield, we recommend booking a short stay in a local hotel, that way you can get a real feel for the community and envisage yourself living there.

Within the vibrant communities in this region, you will always have an abundance of options for outings on your doorstep. The array of unique towns and villages each has their own character and history. So, whether you are after entertainment for the grandchildren, sightseeing around spots of historical and cultural interest, sampling delicious local produce in the best restaurants and tearooms or close proximity of the local beaches, you will be spoilt for choice in the South West.

Getting out and about

Being able to easily visit friends and family or access transport links for your next far-flung adventure is vital in later life. Thankfully, the west of England is well equipped with good transport links with services such as Cross Country, Great Western Railway, South Western Railway, Flybe and Ryanair, so you can have a hassle-free journey from A to B. You’ll also be able to take in the breathtaking views along many of the rail routes through the West Country – we may be biased, but nothing beats gazing out at the rolling fields and superb seascapes that the South West is blessed with.

If you prefer to travel by road, the South West is well-connected to regions far and wide by the M5 and the A30/A303 which are all major roads which link from London to Land’s End.

Safety

Findings from a recent crime map of Britain released by Home Office Data reveals that areas in the South West are some of the safest in England and Wales. Devon and Cornwall ranked at 52 crimes per 1,000 people, Dorset at 58 and Gloucestershire at 49.2. West Yorkshire is ranked at the most dangerous place to live, with the top ranking of 101.7 crimes per 1,000 people. So, as the South West is well and truly in the safer zone of the crime rating, you can rest in the knowledge that you will be moving to one of the most crime free areas of the country.

Picturesque

Each corner of the South West is blessed with natural beauty and picturesque scenery. Visitors travel across the globe to experience the splendour of the South West, drawn by the unique rural surroundings and quaint cottages in The Cotswolds, the dramatic landscapes of the South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural beauty in Devon, and the sublime picture-postcard harbour of St Ives known as Cornwall’s ‘favourite seaside town’ – to name just a few!

So, those are some of our reasons for loving living in the South West, but don’t just take our word for it. If you are ever in doubt, paying a visit to your favoured location will be sure to help with your decision. After all, the spectacular scenery speaks for itself!
