National report reveals lack of suitable housing for retired.

More specialist retirement housing needs to be built to avoid a national shortage of suitable accommodation for older people, a study has found.

Conducted by the International Longevity Centre UK (ILC-UK), the report showed that the rate at which specialist retirement properties are currently being built isn’t meeting demand for an ageing population, resulting in a predicted 160,000 retirement housing shortage by 2030.

Additionally, findings revealed that over 50% of over 65s live in homes with two or more spare bedrooms.

Baroness Sally Greengross, Chief Executive of ILC-UK said:

“Our report highlights that there are millions of over 50s who haven’t adapted their housing for old age and may be in homes too big for them. Retirement housing could be a solution for some older people but we are building far too few of this type of housing.”

Since 2008, Blue Cedar Homes have been building specialist retirement homes to meet the needs of the over 55s and now boast a selection of exclusive developments across the Westcountry and beyond.

Nick Hole, Director of Blue Cedar Homes said:

“Blue Cedar Homes was established as a response to personal experience of family members not being able to find suitable accommodation when they wanted to downsize their property in later life and this research further supports this notion and shows there is more work to be done.

Our developments aren’t retirement complexes, they offer flexibility and independence with the added benefits of security, likeminded neighbours, spacious homes and a visiting Estate Manager to take care of the gardens and provide general maintenance across the development.”

As well as enjoying an exclusive, private and beautifully landscaped setting, each Blue Cedar Homes property has its own garage, additional parking and private rear garden.

All houses are finished to a very high standard with quality fixtures and fittings used throughout and offers flexible ground floor accommodation to create an additional bedroom and en-suite if a homeowner’s needs should change in the future.

Blue Cedar Homes now also offers retirement apartments, now available in Chagford and soon to be completed in Stoke Gabriel.
