Time to move? Why not make the South West your new home?

spending many months in lockdown allowed many of us the opportunity to reflect on where we live, what’s important to us and what’s lacking in our current home situation. For some this will have triggered a desire to move home, maybe to be closer to loved ones, or to be part of a stronger local community, or to fulfil that long-held aspiration of a home by the sea or perhaps from a purely practical standpoint to find a low maintenance home to make life that bit easier. Whatever your reasons, now could be the ideal time to take the plunge and make a move to the beautiful South West.

A new exciting life, where no two days need be the same

A life living in the South West is certainly not monotonous. From the beautiful countryside walks and secret beaches to the historic towns and villages, there is always something to do. One of the charms of living in the South West is how tranquil it can be, for example, when you explore the National Parks of Dartmoor or Exmoor, you will discover a vast area to roam free from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Or maybe you’ll find your calm haven on the South West coast? One of the longest and most dramatic coastlines in England and proudly home to some of the finest beaches in the UK.

As well as miles of coastline, national parks, valleys and forests the South West of England is also home to some of the most beautiful and enchanting sights in the UK, including UNESCO world heritage site Stonehenge. The region also boasts areas of outstanding natural beauty such as the charming Cotswolds, with its signature honey-coloured period homes and quaint villages. The Quantock Hills with its expansive views over Somerset comprises heathland, rivers, lakes, oak woodlands and ancient parklands is another AONB in the West Country.

The region’s credentials don’t stop there. The 95 miles of coast stretching from Exmouth in East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset, the Jurassic Coast, was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2001 – recognised as one of the most important, interesting and visually stunning coastlines in the world. If you are interested in finding out more about these areas and the things you can do all year round, visit the local tourist board websites for more information:

Feel happier and healthier

We all know that spending time outdoors, whether that’s walking or being more active, has been shown to not only improve our physical fitness but also improve mental health and our overall wellbeing. In fact, a new study by Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the University of Exeter, has found that spending time in marine and coastal environments has ‘therapeutic effects’ on us reportedly bringing increased happiness levels, better general health and greater engagement in physical activities.

With its abundance of coastal and rural areas, the South West is a clean air haven and the perfect place to spend time outside. The region enjoys areas with the lowest pollution levels and records some of the best air quality in the UK.

Local produce at its best

You will never be far from locally farmed, fresh produce here in the South West, as it is an area built on farming there’s an abundance of fresh meat, organic fruit and vegetables and sumptuous seafood all over the region.

There are some world-famous local delicacies, probably the most popular and well-known is the traditional cream tea. A must for anyone relocating to the region, but make sure you find out the Devonshire and Cornish ways of having either the jam or the cream first – it is hugely important you get the right order for the county you’re in! Of course, there’s the famous Cornish pasty, or the lesser-known, but equally delicious Devonshire Squab pie, Gloucestershire’s famously pungent Stinking Bishop cheese, Cornish crab, award-winning wine, gin and you can’t come to the South West without sampling Scrumpy! Check out Taste of the West to find out more about the region’s traditional dishes and specialities.

Safe Haven

Your home should be a place you feel safe. Certainly, an area with a low crime rate can not only help you feel secure in your home and neighbourhood, it will also mean your home insurance premiums are lower too. Again, the West Country comes up trumps.  Crime rates across the region are a fraction of those you would find in London or any other big city, indeed Devon and Cornwall Police reported the third lowest crime rate of any force in England and Wales.

Being one of the safest regions in the country also brings with it a sense of community. The West Country is often described as having a more relaxed, or laid-back pace of life, and perhaps it is because of this that residents recognise the region’s strong community credentials and a sense that neighbours look out for one another.

Whitelady Waterfall

Find it: EX20 4BH. 8.3 miles from Kelly Gardens.

Nestled within Lydford Gorge, the stunning Whitelady Waterfall is described as an ‘outstanding sight to behold’. Not only is the Whitelady Waterfall a great spot to visit for memorable photo opportunities and refreshing days out, it is also of huge benefit to the surrounding wildlife. It is a hotspot for many varieties of mosses and ferns!
