Banish the winter blues with these revitalising walks in glorious Devon

Winter is the perfect time to wrap up warm, put on your wellington boots and head outside for an invigorating walk.

Getting out in the great outdoors is not only excellent for your physical health, it is also a tonic for your mental wellbeing. According to Walking for Health, a good walk can improve your mood and sleep quality, while reducing stress, anxiety and fatigue.

If you are keen to increase your physical activity and explore your local surroundings, we have compiled a list of four of our favourite scenic and revitalising walks in South and East Devon. With a variety of long and short routes, plus walks that are suitable for mobility scooters – there is a route to suit everyone in this beautiful county.

Greenway Gardens

Find it: Galmpton, Greenway Road, TQ5 0ES.


Enjoy a peaceful guided walk around the gardens surrounding Greenway House , Agatha Christie’s beloved family holiday home in Galmpton. Throughout early February, you can get to know the luscious green gardens that surround Greenway House with a free guided walk, so you can absorb the stunning views across the Dart Estuary and hear the stories behind ‘the loveliest place in the world’. Each walk varies in length, so you can pick one to suit your requirements. Tour routes start from the car park at Greenway.

Routes: Sunday 2nd Feb from 11am until 1pm – 4.5km walk / Sunday 9th Feb from 11am until 1pm – 3km walk

Start Point

Find it: Start Point Car Park, TQ7 2ET


This gentle stroll is perfect for the colder months, allowing you to enjoy the stunning rugged scenery of Start Point and look out to the far-reaching views of the ocean just a short distance from the car park. This easy access walk is suitable for mobility scooters and pushchairs. The steady descent down the old lighthouse road to the headland is tarmacked, so you will not have to worry about uneven ground. If you are lucky enough to visit on a very clear day, views stretch along the coast to the Isle of Portland, which shows up as a low wedge on the horizon.

Route: 1.3 miles, easy access.

Bovey Valley Woods

Find it: Pullabrook Car Park, Bovey Tracey, TQ13 9SR


If the weather is on the damp side, you can stay dry by opting for a walk through the beautiful woods that grace Dartmoor National Park. A favourite of ours is the Bovey Valley woodlands, which feature a collection of walks spanning across 212.98 acres, and comprises easy access routes with parking. You’ll be able to get close to nature and spot an abundance of wildlife and fascinating flora. Bovey Valley Woods is made up of three Woodland Trust sites: Hislay Wood, Houndtor Wood and Pullabrook Wood, all of which lie in the valley of the River Bovey, on the south-east side of Dartmoor.

Routes: Multiple. Bovey Valley Woods has a large network of footpaths with a combination of hunting gates and step-over stiles.

The Otter Estuary

Find it: 1 Granary Ln, Budleigh Salterton EX9 6JD

If you fancy a short walk with scenic surroundings, then this collection of accessible walks along the east coast of Devon will suit you perfectly. This route comprises three routes along the South West Coast Path that are suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and mobility scooters. Each walk starts off from Lime Kilm car park in Budleigh Salterton. The first walk (¼ mile) is along the seafront to the picturesque town centre. The second (½ mile each way) is along a sea wall alongside the otter estuary, which provides a level path from which to watch the birds of the estuary. The final walk (¼ mile) is along a spit of shingle between the sea and the estuary.

Route: Walk 1: ¼ miles, Walk 2: ½ miles, Walk 3: ¼ miles
